Britain’s WAR on Work

The 2025 Budget targets small business owners and higher earners. Learn how new tax rises, dividend changes and VAT threats could impact your income.

If Rachel Reeves goes ahead with the tax increases planned for the budget, you might honestly think you should just quit. Pack it in, cut your hours, or shut down entirely.

That isn’t hyperbole. It is a genuine financial calculation many are making right now. Because for many business owners and higher earners, it’s getting to the point where sticking around is becoming a bad financial decision.

The government is no longer hiding it. They are designing a tax system that punishes businesses who take risks and create jobs.

The Tax Assault: Income, Dividends, and More

The Chancellor’s strategy seems to be a “triple whammy” on productivity. Let’s look at what is hitting your wallet:

  • Income Tax: Higher earners (those over £50k) are squarely in the crosshairs to pay for new spending commitments.
  • Dividend Tax: Leaks suggest a further 2% increase on dividend tax. This is a direct tax on business owners who take risks to drive the economy.
  • Corporation Tax: Already jacked up to 25% for many.
  • Employer’s National Insurance: This is, for all intents and purposes, a tax on jobs. It means you get less of a pay rise, or worse, businesses stop hiring altogether.

Key Takeaway

The government is launching a “triple whammy” tax assault on business owners: higher Corporation Tax, a 2% Dividend Tax hike, and increased Employer NI. Combined with a potential 20% “Exit Tax” for those trying to leave, the cost of doing business in the UK has never been higher.

Businesses take all the risk. You work 60-hour weeks. You put your own money on the line. And your reward? More tax.

The Economic Disconnect

Here is what doesn’t make sense. The economy is struggling. Businesses are drowning. Unemployment has just hit 5%—the highest since 2021—and wage growth is at its lowest point in years.

And the Chancellor’s pro-growth solution? Lifting the two-child benefit cap.

Helping families is a good thing, but it has to be paid for. They are making those who earn over £50k foot the bill. You may have made tough financial decisions—limiting your family size because you couldn’t afford more, or missing bedtime stories because you were working late. Now, you will have less money because you did exactly what the government should be promoting: making responsible financial decisions.

The “French” Problem

This strategy feels eerily familiar. It reminds me of France. Over there, you can’t sack anyone, pensions are unsustainable, and the public sector is bloated.

It feels like Reeves is trying to shortcut her way there.

  • National Debt: Nearly 100% of GDP. We owe £2.6 trillion.
  • The Danger: We are borrowing just to keep the lights on. When a country’s debt becomes unsustainable, the IMF eventually forces overnight cuts—immediate welfare slashes and tax rises. Nobody wants to see that happen to the UK again.

Their solution to this debt isn’t to cut waste; it’s to squeeze more out of the productive part of the economy to fund an ever-growing public sector.

The Exit Tax Trap

You might be thinking, “Bugger this, I’ll move to Dubai or Singapore where they actually want entrepreneurs.”

They have thought of that, too.

Reports suggest the Treasury is floating a 20% Exit Tax on your assets if you try to leave the UK.

  • Stay: They tax you into the ground.
  • Leave: They take a fifth of everything you’ve built.

HMRC data already shows a record number of people changing their tax residency. Capital and ideas are mobile. If you trap them, they won’t just pay up; they will stop building here in the first place.

It’s Not Just Business Owners

Before any employees think this doesn’t affect them—wake up.

When businesses can’t afford to hire, jobs vanish. When small businesses shut down, who is left? Big corporations who dodge tax anyway. And when entrepreneurs give up, you foot the bill.

Your Income Tax will go up. Your Council Tax will go up. Your VAT will go up. And what will you get for it? Potholes, a six-month wait list for the NHS, and classrooms with 35 kids. You are paying more for the same broken services.

The Real Cost: £4,000 Gone

Let’s look at the real numbers. Say your company was doing £100k profit.

  • Under new rates: You’ll keep roughly £54k after Corporation Tax and Dividend Tax.
  • Under old rates: You’d have kept closer to £58k.

That is £4,000 gone for doing exactly the same work. That is a staff bonus, a marketing campaign, or a family holiday—vanished.

Don’t let the new budget wipe out your hard work. We can help you restructure and protect your income.

Survival Mode: Don’t Quit, Adapt

We are stuck with this government until 2029. You have two choices:

  1. Quit: Pack it in and let them win.
  2. Adapt: Plan, survive, and protect your income.

While they are busy stifling the economy, you need to do everything you can to ensure it doesn’t ruin you financially. There are still strategies that work:

  • Expense Claims: 90% of business owners miss legitimate expenses.
  • Pension Strategy: This could save you £15,000 a year in tax.
  • Cash Extraction: Getting money out before the rules change further.

We have put together an emergency resource: The Business Survival Guide 2025. It covers exactly how the new dividend tax hits your take-home and, more importantly, how you can fight it.

It’s going to feel like they want you to give up. But all governments are temporary. Download the guide, protect your business, and stay in the game—because if we aren’t careful, there won’t be a private sector left to tax.
